The Gallery Upstairs, Upton Country Park, Poole.

23 March – 3 April 2023 (10am-4pm).   Admission Free

An exciting and innovative exhibition of art works, inspired by poems, opened at the Gallery Upstairs, Upton Country Park, Poole on March 23rd.  Open to the public until April 3rd, it features 50 original poems by 10 members of the Poole Poetry Collective (PPC) 1.

PPC member and artist Liz Magee challenged local artists, many of them members of the Poole and East Dorset Arts Society, to create original art works in response to the poems 2.  32 artists responded, with paintings in a range of styles and media, reflecting the diversity of poetic subjects 3.  The exhibition also includes ceramics by PPC member Joanna Wakefield, inspired by her love of ethnic art from historic cultures.

Formally opening the exhibition, BCP Councillor Millie Earl said: “This incredibly inspiring combination of poetry and art vividly captures the emotional content of the poems.  BCP is fortunate to have spaces such as the Gallery Upstairs 4, which are free, open and accessible to residents and visitors, where they can immerse themselves in the work of local artists.”

Liz Magee added: “I have been overwhelmed by the way in which the artists have responded to the poems, and expressed with love the often heartfelt and emotive words of the poets.”
